Targeted Industries
144 square miles of opportunity
With the towering Rocky Mountains to the west and the vast expanse of the high plains to the east, no wonder anything’s possible in Aurora. The city’s pro-business attitude, ample land, cost-effective lease rates, excellent infrastructure, and educated workforce fuel a dynamic economy.
Here aerospace industries and bioscience firms rub shoulders with business services suppliers and retail trade companies. These local businesses serve regional, national, and international markets by virtue of Aurora’s location in the center of the United States.
Colorado’s third most populated city, Aurora has a reasonable cost of doing business and low tax rates that are attracting primary employers to set up shop on its 144 square miles of opportunity.
Aerospace and Defense
The aerospace and defense industry is a crucial component of Colorado’s technology economy. Also, because of Colorado’s geographical location, it provides one-bounce satellite communications to Europe and Asia, and due to our Mountain Time Zone, Colorado companies can efficiently conduct business with both continents during the same business day. Raytheon Company, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company all have major operations in Aurora. In fact, Raytheon is the city’s second largest private employer with more than 2,200 employees (Northrop has 830, Lockheed has 780, and Boeing has 240 – all in the top 25 largest private employers).
Bioscience
Aurora’s Fitzsimons is a key component of Colorado's bioscience industry. The Anschutz Medical Campus and Fitzsimons Life Science District redevelopment project consists of one square mile undergoing a $5.2 billion transformation at the northwest corner of I-225 and Colfax Avenue. The site, which currently employees more than 21,000, is the home of the University of Colorado Denver health sciences operations, the University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, the new Veterans Administration Hospital, and several other centers for health care, biomedical research and workforce development.
Renewable-Energy
Renewable energy is a burgeoning industry within the state of Colorado. The world faces a finite supply of fossil fuels and in response to a dramatic shift in federal policies, programs and budget priorities, Colorado is emerging as a leader in many areas of renewable energy including solar, wind, bio-fuels, hydropower, geothermal, and biomass technologies. The Solar Technology Acceleration Center (SolarTAC) in Aurora is the largest test facility for solar technologies in the United States, occupying 74-acres at the 1,762-acre Aurora Campus for Renewable Energy (ACRE). It is an integrated, world-class test facility where the solar industry can research, test, validate, and demonstrate solar technologies.
Transportation Logistics
Aurora’s I-70 corridor, the city’s proximity to Denver International Airport (DIA), prime warehouse and distribution business parks, the availability of developable land, a pro-business government and highly accessable workforce combined make Aurora a force in transportation and logistics activity. All of these elements have attracted quality developers who are able to deliver high-quality industrial product quickly and efficiently for users looking for attractive places to relocate or expand. The northeast Aurora area will continue to see significant development by national developers such as Majestic Realty, the Pauls Corporation, LNR Property and A & C Properties that all have active sites in the area.
