About Us

Aurora Leaders

The best and the brightest

Your name and title:

Randy Berner – Project Executive

Description of your company:

Adolfson & Peterson Construction is the third largest general contractor in the Colorado Region.  We build large commercial construction projects in a wide range of markets in Colorado and the surrounding states.  We currently have seven other offices throughout the U.S.

Your role and philosophy at your company:

As a Project Executive for A&P, I am in charge of project management for the region and share responsibility with operations management as well.  Our business depends on customer satisfaction and being active partners with our clients. We strive for projects to be of the best quality, delivered on time, under budget and to also have fun while doing business.

Where did you grow up and when did you move to Colorado? How did you find yourself in Aurora?

I moved to Colorado when I was three and grew up in Lakewood.  I do consider myself a native, however.  I started working for A&P in 1989 and was a graduate of Leadership Aurora in 2004-2005.

What is your favorite thing about living in the metro area?

I love being right next to our beautiful mountains and all the activities and beauty that comes with them.  I love having four distinct seasons and temperature ranges that can vary by 60 degrees from day to day.  I love the dry heat and that we have more sunshine than almost anywhere in the U.S.

Something you are proud of accomplishing (don’t be shy or modest, please):

I am proud of putting our kids through college and watching them grow in life and in their faith in God.  I am also proud of being a part of Leadership Aurora, the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Board, the Aurora Economic Development Council Board and the Police Compliance Committee.  I want to do my best to help the city of Aurora grow and prosper in the next decade.  Having a heart for all charitable organizations is important to me, especially having been co-chair of DAVA, a great non-profit after school organization for students and the arts.

What are your degrees and honors/awards you have earned/received?

I have a BS in Construction Management from Colorado State University.  I graduated from leadership training classes from Dale Carnegie, Rapport Leadership International and Leadership Aurora.  I have Healthcare Construction Certificates and Infection Control training issued through the American Society of Heathcare Engineers.  I am also LEED AP Certified with the USGBC.  I have also gone through the OSHA 30-hour safety training.

What do you do for fun?

I love all sports and physical activities that my body still lets me do.  Golf, bowling, pool, softball, skiing and dancing.  I like being in social situations and staying active whenever I can.

Do you have a favorite Aurora story?

I have several favorite Aurora stories and they all start with the dedication and respect that all our leaders have within the community.  The Aurora EDC and the Chamber are so active in not only Aurora but in the metropolitan area as well.  They have formed partnerships with surrounding cities and counties and have gained the respect of the nation as an All America City that it so justly deserves.  I was so proud of how our city responded to the theater shooting starting with the police, fire, first responders, hospitals and victims advocates, just to name just a few.  And I was proud of the support from the Mayor, city manager and city staff on this senseless and tragic event and what they have done for the victims and their families.

What would you say is Aurora’s biggest secret?

Aurora's biggest secret is the economic potential for all businesses when they come to Aurora.  Also, the mass of land the city encompasses for future expansion is truly amazing.

You would define Aurora’s strengths as:

Having Buckley Air Force Base has to be number one along with a really well-run government and city administration.  The abundance of land and the E-470, I-225 and I-70 infrastructure are huge strengths.  And the future light rail being constructed in Aurora that will address transportation congestion.  Having both Denver International Airport and Front Range Airport (Space Port) nearby is a great strength for Aurora.

What would you change in Aurora and/or the metro area?

I would work on the older neighborhoods' image.  The city has made significant strides in this area over the years.

What do you think is the most important issue/challenge in Aurora?

I think the addition of University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado and the new VA Hospital have been wonderful for the city.  However, our city will need to address any traffic, parking, and other transportation issues that the new development may create.

How would you define a leader?

A leader is someone who leads by example in every way.  Whether it’s leading your teams, putting in the hours, living by the rules or just being a cheerleader and mentor for your employees, peers, family and friends.  A leader is willing to be responsible for actions of themselves and others as necessary in every situation.
